Metal roofing systems typically contain at least 50% recycled product, last 75 – 100 years, provider cleaner rainwater harvesting, and make the application of solar panels easy / penetration free. The wood battens over the Water Resistant Barrier create both a bulk water drainage plane as well as a ventilation channel for drying out moisture from inside the wall system out. In the foreground we can see the newest building going up!
Curious about the lack of penetrations in the new roof. Is this a design feature or are you waiting on the plumber?
I think it’s just saying that solar panels can be mounted without penetrations needed for support, as they can be attached to the standing seams. But there would need to be some kind of envelope opening for both electrical connections and plumbing vent pipes, although both could theoretically go through the eaves.
Hi Jim,
We’ve eliminated penetrations through the roof both to improve roof longevity and eliminate the associated thermal bridging. (Oh, and it looks a lot nicer too!) The metal roofing allows for PV panels to be clipped on to the seams rather than screwed through the roof. Also plumbing vents are reduced in number with air admittance valves and those that remain exit the buildings through a side wall. Eventually some plumbing vents will penetrate the roof at the eaves but at that point there’s little worry about leakage or thermal bridging.
